Good Saturday. I'm finishing up a long day that began with the aroma of grilled meat and the rhythm of Latin music wafting through my open car window in the parking lot at the Meadowlands.
I hear the traffic is terrible outside.
Good day for the real football -- soccer. I wrote a column in The Times.

And here is my take on the great rivalry itself, done for an interesting new outlet.

george,

just read your brazil/argentina piece. you said something that made me smile when you mentioned going from watching the north american stuff to what you saw at your first world cup......used to wonder if americans really knew how bad that league was.

also, once again, you've made yourself susceptible to being strip searched the next time you go thru customs when you mention the rivalry between brazil and argentina as perhaps (!) the greatest rivalry in the america. think you have to include the u.s in that somehow or have yer citizenship revoked, don't you? what about the yankees and boston or.......?

Great article and great game.

Brazil-Argentina meetings are always great. But in fact, when the Brazil play against Uruguay, we are more frightened, because of the trauma of World Cup-1950.

Another rivalry that Brazilians are aware is against the Italians. The results are unpredictable, like the games Yankees-Red Sox.

And now because the World Cup in 1998 and 2006, we are terrified with the France.

Strip the top layer of varnish with a rented drum sander and 60-grit sandpaper. Sand from a far corner of the room and move backward, going in slow, steady strokes with the direction of the floorboards.

If you could only just go to work without the headache of co-workers! They spend the whole day backstabbing, sucking up and trying to get all the credit for the efforts of everyone else. It's amazing they can't just do their job without all the drama.

One of our most powerful budgeting moments was when we started budgeting fun things. For the longest time, I felt horrible about eating out, taking vacations, or buying new tech-toys, because ‘”we shouldn’t be spending money”.

Even an animal knows "there's no place like home" and they show it in all the lovely ways they mark "their territory", the gifts brought in from outside, toys everywhere.

Home shopping and internet services have reduced the number of retail jobs, although as people love the shopping experience the retail industry will continue with fewer staff.

George

Soccer will probably not replace the major American sports leagues’for some time, including Canadian hockey, but it has definitely arrived in the US. The quality of the MLS is steadily growing, but not quite as fast as fan awareness. Media coverage is also more tuned in, even in my small town newspaper The Berkshire Eagle. The Chelsea-Bayren Munich game made it to the Morning Joe program.

Although my soccer career, which began in 1948 in Junior HS and continued for ten years up through graduate school, the World Cup was off my radar until 1978. I owned a retail appliance store on 98th and Broadway in Manhattan. My Argentinian salesman insisted on watching the games during working hours, even though we were busy selling air conditioners.

It was easy to watch the games as we also sold TV’s and all the sets were tuned to the game. Initially, I tried to limit him to only the Argentinian games, but the customers came in to watch other games. Eventually, we placed a TV in the window and attracted crowds for the duration of the World Cup.

Many of my customers were ethnic soccer fans from all over the world and I was caught up in their excitement. I have avidly followed the World Cup, including the Woman’s, ever since.

My son and I attended four 1994 World Cup games at Giant Stadium. The crowd electricity was greater than any other professional sport’s playoff’s that I had attended, including a Ranger-Devil triple overtime Stanley Cup game. Ireland defeated Italy 1-0 much to the dismay of a predominately Italian crowd. However, the jubilant Irish stood and cheered their team for over an hour. My wife was concerned that we would be very late for company at our apartment later in the afternoon, but the Irish cheering helped by keeping fans in the stadium. We were out of Giant Stadium and home at 92nd and Central Park West in about a half an hour.

There must be something about representing your country that trumps all else.
